Nyong’o tells his critics to let him work

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has lashed out at a section of local politicians for allegedly politicising ongoing demolitions being undertaken by his administration.

Nyong’o accused a section of unnamed politicians of hijacking the process for political gain, saying he would not be distracted by what he termed their cheap propaganda.

He said the demolitions were being conducted in a structured manner to pave way for earmarked development projects.

The county boss told traders to be wary of politicians who are out to score from spreading propaganda over the demolitions that have sparked a public outcry. “

The county government is not destroying the livelihoods of traders as being peddled by politicians and activists.

What we are doing is systematic reorganisation of the city to give way for more lined-up projects,” Nyong’o said.

Speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LAPTRUST on an affordable housing project, he promised that all affected traders will be accommodated in alternative business premises.

“We are not chasing away the small-scale traders from their usual businesses.

On the contrary, we are relocating them to more conducive environment,” he said.

LAPTRUST Chief Executive Hosea Kili said the Sh3.8 billion Anderson-Ofafa affordable housing project seeks to provide over 1,200 decent housing units to the lakeside residents, thereby housing about 4,000 households once complete.

Kili said the multi-million housing scheme is the first project executed by his organisation outside Nairobi.

Besides addressing the challenge of affordable housing, the project will also create jobs.

“We believe in leading the way in devising innovative ways to solve problems for the benefit of our members as well as stakeholders,” Kili said.
