Parliamentary committee members hit back at LDK boss

Members of a parliamentary committee accused by an industrialist of taking bribes to fix him over a pollution related matter now want Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi to constitute a team to probe the allegations.

The MPs, who are members of the Implementation committee, while denying the allegations, said the management of the London Distillers Limited (LDK) were hiding under the bribery claims to run away from the pollution issue, which has been haunting the company for years.

“The committee is beyond reproach, we are in the process of uncovering the alcoholic beverages maker and the way it has been endangering the lives of thousands of people in the locality,” committee chairman Moitalel Ole Kenta told a press conference at Parliament buildings.

He added, “We want whoever made the wild allegations to substantiate and give tangible evidence before an independent establishment.”

LDK has accused Erdermann Property Ltd of bribing members of the parliamentary committee with residential houses.

In a letter to Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, LDK wants him to order an inquiry to ascertain information that some members of the Implementation Committee were given houses at Great Wall Gardens on Mombasa road, Nairobi, by the property developer.

“The said members of the committee received houses either freely or over subsidised rate through proxies being family members, relatives or companies in which they have interests,” reads the letter signed by LDK chairman Mohan Galot.

Letter to Speaker

Motalel said the committee would not be intimidated by wild allegations thrown around by the industrialist.

Committee vice chairman, Geoffrey Osotsi said they were acting on the findings of the Environment Committee, which had even recommended for the closure of the firm.

“The allegations made by the industrialist are grave and should not go unsubstantiated, we will not rest until after justice is done to us,” Osotsi said.

LDK has been embroiled in a dispute with residents of Great Wall Gardens, owned by Erdermann Property Ltd, over claims of emptying toxic waste into Athi River.
